Holter Monitor

Holter monitor records heart rhythm on a continuous ECG trace that can be downloaded to and analysed on a computer. Five leads are attached to the chest with stickers  and are connected to the device. It is necessary in diagnosing the cause of dizziness, black outs, palpitations and a range of similar symptoms. 

You need to visit the Practice once to have the device attached and then, to have it removed. The duration of monitoring can be 24 hours, 48 hours or 7 days depending on the frequency of your symptoms. 

 

INDICATIONS

Patients with syncope, near syncope, or dizziness occurring on a daily or near daily basis. Patients with palpitations occurring on a daily or near daily basis. Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) for assessment of ventricular rate control. Patients with recent acute coronary syndrome (especially non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction [NSTEMI] or STEMI), hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, long QT syndrome, dilated or restrictive cardiomyopathy, congenital heart disease, or Brugada syndrome, in whom screening for ventricular ectopy or non-sustained ventricular arrhythmias might alter prognosis and therapy.

It is not possible to have a shower while the Holter monitor is attached. Therefore, having a shower prior to monitor attachment may be considered. Do not wet any part of Holter monitor. Continue your usual activities of the day If you have a symptom, posture change or activity to record, press EVENT button, fill in the diary with time displayed on LCD
